Drainage.
(Machu Picchu has intricately designed drainage systems including carved stone "pipes," multi-layered foundations, and water redirection routes. Eight natural springs fed the city and torrential rains would have been common. This allowed using water for living and farming while preventing corrosion and flooding.)
